Saudi students get the rundown on Everything Australian.

On Tuesday, 16 June 2009, the University of South Australia kindly hosted the Saudi Seminar Day – with multiple information sessions for the Saudi students. Australia provides exciting challenges for Saudi students, yet some of those challenges can be daunting if the student is unaware of how to go about their daily lives in Australia. It was for this reason that the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission, the Saudi Students Club, and the University of South Australia co-organized a comprehensive Seminar day: Inviting guest speakers from Department of Immigration and Citizenship,

the South Australian Police, Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service, International Education Services, Department of Education and Children Services, SA / NT - OSHC World care and the University of South Australia. The event was a big success, with many of the Saudi students finding the seminar very useful. The speakers also found the concept very beneficial. Professor Hilary Winchester,Pro Vice Chancellor and Vice ,University of South Australia stated” I felt very privileged to be present at this inaugural event organised by the Saudi Students Club in Adelaide and sponsored by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. To me it was an event which crossed cultural boundaries and enhanced mutual understanding. In my brief welcome I spoke about the value of international education in overcoming prejudice and building a better world. This was an occasion to welcome Saudi students to Adelaide, to embrace cultural differences and to impart useful information on the logistics of living in a foreign country. It was a joyful, productive and hospitable event and set a benchmark for others to follow. I congratulate the Embassy and the Cultural Mission for arranging this event.” Greg Connelly, International Education Services Manager, Said: “I found all sessions extremely informative, I would think that all students in attendance would have found most information useful and relevant”. Denise von Wald, Chief Executive, Education Adelaide pointed out: “It was terrific to see so many Saudi students at the sessions which are designed to help them quickly settle into Adelaide and answer any question they may have about Visa compliance, quarantine, health, the law, student support and childcare. Once students fully appreciate these matters they can focus on their most important task – their studies.Adelaide has a long associate with Islam Adelaide has a long association with Islam. The Adelaide Mosque, in Little Gilbert Street, was built in the late 1880s, and is the oldest mosque in Australia.Today Adelaide is home to international students from more than 130 countries and prides itself on being a dynamic, diverse and welcoming city”. No doubt, with the shedding of misunderstandings, such seminars can only help strengthen Australian-Saudi academic and cultural ties.
