A fund-raising dinner at the University of New England in Armidale on Friday 20 March, organised by the Saudi Student’s Association, raised over $950 for the Red Cross to help victims of the bushfires in Victoria. The dinner was organised to allow members of the UNE and Armidale communities to enjoy an experience of Middle Eastern culture, including Middle Eastern food and Arabic music. The Saudi Students Association donated the ingredients, and students and their families donated time and cooking skills to the dinner, asking attendees for a $5 donation towards the |
Red Cross fund as an entry fee. This entry fee raised $955 for the Red Cross, which was handed to the President of the Armidale Branch of the Red Cross, Mrs Pauline Cavel on the night. In addition to this money, the Saudi Students Association also presented the Red Cross with a cheque for $1000 towards the fund to assist those affected by the devastating bushfires. Among the 200 guests were the Armidale Dumaresq Mayor, Councillor Peter Ducat, a number of UNE Academic Staff, and over 50 Saudi students and their families. President of the Saudi Students Association, Mr Hamoud Al-Shamri, said that the night was thoroughly enjoyable, and he was very pleased with the attendance. The Saudi Students Association currently has over 70 members made up of students and their dependents, plus a number of children who have accompanied their parents to UNE while they study. UNE is very proud that the Saudi Students Association put on this function, and made such a worthwhile contribution to both the Red Cross, and to the social calendar of the UNE and Armidale communities.
